🚲 The Baradine V-Brake Upgrade: Snappy Stops and DIY Satisfaction

My trusty old bike, which has been my go-to ride for ages, started feeling a bit off lately—the brakes just weren't gripping like they used to. When I took a closer look, I realized the brake pads were completely worn down to the bone.

Normally, I would’ve just wheeled it down to the local bike shop, but this time I felt a sudden urge to fix it myself. After a quick search online, the setup looked surprisingly simple.

🛠️ Rolling Up My Sleeves

So, I went ahead and ordered a pair of Baradine V-brake pads, which everyone seems to recommend. All I needed from my toolbox was:

  • A small Phillips screwdriver

  • An Allen wrench

It was way easier than I expected!

Taking off the old, crusty pads and getting the new ones aligned properly took a bit of focus, though. I had to make sure they were perfectly flush against the wheel rim without any weird tilting, and then use the screwdriver to fine-tune the tension.

When I finally torqued down the bolts and squeezed the brake levers, the feedback was incredibly crisp and solid. Sure, a bike shop would’ve knocked it out in minutes, but there’s really nothing like the DIY satisfaction of rolling up your sleeves, grabbing some tools, and fixing something with your own two hands. 🙌

 

 

🇹🇼 A Hidden Gem: "Made in Taiwan"

The funny thing was when I was cleaning up the packaging and caught the "Made in" label. These days, literally everything you see is Made in China, but this one surprisingly said "Made in Taiwan."

 

You don’t run into Taiwanese-made goods too often anymore, but it hit me that Taiwan is actually a powerhouse in the cycling world. No wonder the rubber felt so premium and the overall build quality was so solid. 💎

 

🌿 My Perfect Little Escape

It’s crazy how changing out just one tiny part can make you fall in love with your bike all over again.

Tomorrow, I'm going to take it out for a nice, long spin around the neighborhood, fully trusting these fresh, snappy brakes. In a repetitive daily routine, my bike really is the perfect little escape. 🍃

As expected, reptiles are weak in winter.

 I picked up a long-tailed snake around September, in the fall. I fed it crickets and raised it well, but it died around December. It was fun to hold and pet, but it's a shame.   When I was serving in the military, I often saw lizards while on guard duty. They were such a welcome companion, helping me to relieve my boredom.
